Cities contribute 80% to global GDP, while consume 80% of global resources and account for 75% of global emissions. There is no exception for Taiwan, a prosperous island located in East Asia. We embraced rapid urbanization after the 1950s. Like other highly developed European cities, our capital city, Taipie, faces severe challenges: climate change, aging population, aging cities, traffic congestion, air pollution, and energy over-consumption.

We have our own problems. As 80% of our population lives in the city, 70% of Taipei’s residential buildings are older than its life cycle which is 35 years. And while urban renewal is urgent, there are lands waiting for over 20 years since the process of land consolidation is super sluggish. As a result, the elders and young families could not afford the soaring housing prices and had to live in the separated, small rental spaces.

“How could we make a change for all?” Team TDIS believes that good designs are the sincere response to people’s true needs, and are best done by transdisciplinary teamwork. The team proposes an integrated solution “1 House for All” that could be replicated in different urban site conditions and respond to diverse group’s needs. In brief, “1 House for All” means Net Zero Mid-way Houses, but also Social Enterprise-Housing, and Energy-Efficient Sharing Stations
in the city. With sustainability in heart, we hope to push the energy transformation and low-carbon urban renewal in the city from aspects of design, construction, and operation altogether. We believe this can solve the three major obstacles of moving towards sustainability: Energy Over-consumption, Inefficient Urban Renewal, and Housing Injustice.
