About Us

The Transdisciplinary Design Innovation Shop (TDIS) at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University is dedicated to transdisciplinary practice across four areas: architectural innovation, sustainable green energy, smart living, and public education.

Overview

TDIS was founded in 2015, growing out of UNICODE, a transdisciplinary design team of NCTU faculty and students who represented Taiwan at Solar Decathlon Europe 2014 with the "Orchid House" — a proposal that became a core concept for sustainable building in Taiwan. Over a month-long competition in France, Orchid House drew wide media attention at home and abroad, winning first place in Urban Design, second place in Innovation, and third place in both Energy Efficiency and the People's Choice award, marking a milestone for Taiwan's participation in international green-building competitions.

The name "TDIS" is pronounced like the English word "This," emphasizing a focus on the here and now — on facing the complex challenges of the next generation. We believe solutions should not be deferred to the future, and local problems should not be left to the international community, but addressed through concrete action in the present.

Our Belief

We believe the key to project innovation lies in vertical and horizontal integration through mechanisms and platforms. "Transdisciplinarity" is the core method for effectively solving the complex problems of the next generation. The TDIS team brings together architects, engineers, designers, artists, and social researchers to face the challenges of a new era, focusing on architectural innovation, sustainable green energy, smart living, and public education. We use tools such as spatial design, industrial design, graphic design, and social design to embed sustainability into design itself, responding to core environmental and social issues.

In the fields of sustainable design, smart living, and public education, TDIS conducts independent research as well as industry-academia collaborations, continuously advancing transdisciplinary design research and application. Through circular design, product development, exhibition curation, and publications, we translate research findings into real-world applications — seeking new possibilities for Taiwan's academic, industrial, and civic communities, and ways for civilization to coexist sustainably with the natural environment.
