About

National Yang Ming Chiao Tong University, Transdisciplinary Design Innovation Shop (TDIS)

With extensive experience in international architecture, industry-academia collaboration and international exhibitions, we combine technological expertise, design and storytelling skills to represent Taiwan in the Solar Decathlon Europe 2022. We embed the core values of sustainability into the design, addressing contemporary environmental and social issues. We propose an innovative integrated green building solution called “1 House for All”, which aims to promote low-carbon urban regeneration through sustainable energy, material cycle and shared economy principles.

The pronunciation of TDIS is derived from ‘This’, focusing on ‘this moment’, ‘this place’ and ‘this time’. We look for immediate action plans and solutions to local problems. Present problems should not be left for the future, local problems should not be passed on to the international community, and we act in the present rather than plan for the future. By integrating existing technologies with innovative approaches, we address environmental challenges, solve core problems and integrate innovative technology, comfortable living and environmental cycles. This is the essence of sustainable solutions and best practice in promoting universal sustainable values.

Our Belief

Founded in 2015, we originated from the interdisciplinary design team UNICODE, formed by students and faculty members from National Chiao Tung University for the Solar Decathlon Europe 2014 (SDE 2014). With “Orchid House” as the core concept of sustainable architecture in Taiwan, we not only attracted the attention of domestic and international media during the month-long competition in France, but also represented Taiwan in winning unprecedented awards, including the 1st prize of UDTA (Urban Design, Transportation, and Affordability), the 2nd prize of Innovation, and the 3rd prize of Energy Efficiency and Public Choice.

We believe that the key to project innovation lies in vertical and horizontal integration through mechanisms or platforms. “Transdisciplinarity” is the key to effectively solving the complex problems of the next generation. The TDIS team brings together architects, engineers, designers, artists and social researchers to collectively face the challenges of the new era and dedicate themselves to architectural innovation, sustainable green energy, smart living and social education. Through tools such as spatial design, industrial design, graphic design and social design, we deepen the core values of sustainability in design and address the core issues of environment and society.

In the areas of sustainable design, smart living and social education, TDIS conducts independent research and industry-academia collaborative studies, continuously promoting interdisciplinary design research and applications. Through circular design, product development, exhibition planning and book publications, we promote the application of research results. We hope to discover new opportunities for Taiwan’s academia, industry and society, and to find methods for the development of a civilisation that can coexist sustainably with the natural environment!
